Bill Millerd Artist Fund

Supporting the Growth of Canadian Theatre

In the early 1960s, the Koerner Foundation awarded Bill a grant that assisted him in attending the National Theatre School. After 46 years as Artistic Managing Director at the Arts Club, Bill wants to gift similar life-changing opportunities to other theatre artists.

The Bill Millerd Artist Fund supports theatre artists by providing them with opportunities to develop their craft and further their artistic endeavors.

In April 2019 we announced the inaugural recipients of the Bill Millerd Artist Fund. The fund assists B.C. theatre artists with expenses related to unique opportunities that will advance their artistic development, such as professional development workshops or classes, mentorships or apprenticeships, residencies with a theatre company, or tuition costs to pursue professional training.

One of the recipients, Lisa Goebel, recently returned from the Intimacy Choreographer’s Intensive at York University in Toronto, Ontario where the Bill Millerd Artist Fund allowed her to participate in an innovative directing workshop in intimacy. Lisa shared her experience with us:

“As one of eight Canadians in attendance, it was a privilege to be accepted into this advanced training program.

Attending the IDI Choreographer’s Intensive was a career defining experience. The first few days were spent observing a three-day workshop, learning the pedagogy behind each exercise, and best practices for navigating this newly developed role. We worked with multiple directors, who are currently Intimacy Directors both on/off Broadway, developing this pedagogy for post-secondary education, as well as the Intimacy Coordinator for HBO. This workshop would be best described as, ‘delightfully intense.’ By the final day, I had choreographed and performed multiple scenes, was evaluated on my teaching style, collaboration abilities, and movement aesthetic. I feel prepared and excited to take on more Intimacy Direction work, and now have a network and support system of other Intimacy Directors that I can collaborate and share ideas with.

I would not have been able to attend this intensive without the support of the Bill Millerd Artist Fund, and am forever thankful to the donors and selection committee for this opportunity.”
