Monty Python’s Spamalot
- Book and lyrics by Eric Idle
- Music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle
A New Musical Lovingly Ripped Off from the Motion Picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Whether or not you’ve seen the movie that inspired it, Spamalot will make you laughalot. Favourites old and new—the Knights Who Say “Ni!” and the Laker Girls among them—appear in this highly irreverent and ironic musical that parodies not only the legend of King Arthur but also well-tread Broadway theatrical conventions. With songs like “The Song That Goes Like This,” “Twice in Every Show,” and “Find Your Grail,” the show will have you looking on the bright side of life.
Running time: Approx. 2 hours 15 minutes, including intermission

"Well done Bill and Company! You couldn't have chosen a better finale for the superb 50th season. As we have come to expect, the Arts Club tries to set the bar higher with each production, and this was no exception. Every detail—the sets, costumes, timing, music, singing and dancing—was simply exquisite! It would be unfair to single out any cast member as they were all beyond brilliant. (Well perhaps Sir Gallahad with his hair tossing deserves a tiny mention...). My sister and I laughed so hard we were gasping for breath. It was zany, irreverent, deliriously hysterical, and just so Not Dead! I have been a loyal Arts Club goer since Seymour St. and it is one of my joys in life. In these dreadful and sad times, the Arts Club deserves a Nobel Prize for helping us keep our perspective, and forcing us to ... all together now... ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE. PS-To Carrie-I too cracked up at the ‘hay’ gag"
"The Monty Python Boys would approve! Absolutely fabulous in all respects, one of the best Arts Club presentations ever"
"Vancouver and the Arts Club should be so proud of this production. From the costumes, to the sets, to the acting, it was flawless! And by the far, the most entertaining and hilarious play I have seen in ages. Congratulations!"
"What a fantastic performance. A great way to end the 2013-2014 season! The talent was amazing and the play was so much fun! We left whistling and singing the tune “the bright side of life.” Would definitely recommend it to others"
"A fantastic show! Broadway-quality voices, staging, costumes, and pace. Bravo, Arts Club!"
"Wow! This was just so much fun. I'd seen it in London and I knew this wonderful play would be in great hands with the Arts Club and Dean Paul Gibson. I'm hoping I can see my way clear to see it again before it closes. Thanks to Bill Millerd and all the creative team for making this happen. Hope it becomes an annual summer tradition!"
"Really liked Spamalot quite a lot. Very entertaining with great costumes, sets, and musicians. As someone old enough to remember the original Monty Python shows, the actors in this production certainly captured the silly and satirical spirit of The Pythons. Lots of fun and a great way to end your 50th season"
—Margaret, North Vancouver
"Two hours of wonderful laughter while enjoying a superb cast, wonderful costumes, great music, and jokes that are part of our cultural heritage and still hilarious. David Marr as King Arthur was brilliant casting. Vancouver audiences know him mostly as a Shakespearian/dramatic performer so it was fun to see what an accomplished comedic actor he is. Bravo!"
"Brilliant; who knew there were so many superb triple-threat performers in the lower mainland!!! And Ken Cormier and the band…best in the world!! Loved every single moment of it!!"

I would rate this right up there with anything I have ever seen on the New York stage or the London stage. Well done everyone! I posted my enthusiasm on my Facebook page. I want all my friends and family to see this"

The cast was awesome and brought perfect energy, singing talent and comedic timing together to great effect"
"A wonderful, high-energy and hilarious show. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone!"
"Wonderful, full of fun and energy and great laughs. Excellent performers, singing was fantastic, loved the characters. Saw Spamalot in New York when it first opened. This performance was just as enjoyable as the first!"
"First-rate production. I saw a touring company do Spamalot at the Ford centre a few years ago and your show has more energy, better staging, clearer voices, and excellent delivery and timing for the humour. I enjoyed every minute of the dancing, singing and silliness. The English humour was presented like a London play. Thanks for the great job"
"Love it, great fun"
"A very fun-filled humorous play. Great cast and props. An uplifting performance. Congrats and bravo ACTC, keep up the great work"
"Best show so far; I didn't want it to end! Acting and singing is fantastic"

"We are season ticket holders, but always look forward to the comedies and musicals Spamalot did not disappoint. The costume and character changes were truly impressive, and the show was hilarious (although I think I am the only one who laughed until I cried on the simplistic "hay" gag!). Just loved this- Jonathan Winsby, Scott Perrie, and Josh Epstein were their usual scene-stealing selves (I will see anything with Jonathan Winsby. He is a joy to watch in any role!), and there could not be more perfect casting than Andrew Cownden as Patsy- the flawless, moon-pie grinning performance blew me away. Congrats, Arts Club, on this outstanding production! Loved every minute!"
"One of the best plays I have seen in Vancouver. The performers deserved the standing ovation they received for their vocal and acting talents"

"I have never been a fan of British humor. As such, although I was generally aware of the Monty Python genre and some of the more-famous lines (you would have to be a hermit not to be exposed to those!), I had never seen the Monty Python movies, nor did I care to. To my surprise, I loved this play! I'd see it again in a minute! The actors' timing and musicality was amazing, and the script was smart and (surprisingly and funnily) current. I am still smiling"

Talking about voices, Jonathan Winsby's singing was terrific. Jay Hindle was great too! Everybody was so strong in all the parts. Andrew Cownden was such a charming Patsy; his face was so expressive. Great evening! (Sorry for the number of "greats" but they all are fitting descriptors!)"
"A delightful, irreverent take on the legends of King Arthur. Truly hilarious. Great music too"
"Spamalot made me giggle a lot! I especially loved the scene with the grenade! Very entertaining indeed. Thanks!"

"We have been attending plays for many years throughout Vancouver. I must say that my husband and myself were not overly ecstatic about going to see Spamalot. (Not really fully appreciating the humour of Monty Python).
However, we totally enjoyed the show. It was extremely entertaining with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor, and the acting and costumes were amazing. Thank you for making our Friday night date a lovely one!"
"Laughed the entire time, of course! Who wouldn't with Monty Python! Was particularly impressed with Josh Epstein's performance! Wow, this guy is versatile! And of course Monty Python always makes you think because it's really a statement about our current lives. I've seen Spamalot before with John O'Hurley as King Arthur. Loved how it was changed to be made more current and Vancouver/Canada specific!!! I think this version was much better than the last I've seen. Congrats to the entire production!"

"This was a great show. The music, dancing, singing and acting were superb. It moves so quickly you could see it several times and see or hear something new each time. When the actors took their bows, I was surprised at what a small cast it was. They were amazing in all their different roles. The acting was extremely good, the costumes (again) were outstanding and the choreography was top notch. Well done! I also was in the audience yesterday that experienced some technical difficulties. The MC handled the "bad" news very well, and it goes to show the old saying "the show must go on" and it did, when it was ready. That's why I love live theatre; it always keeps you on your toes"
—Shirley, North Vancouver
