AN UPLIFTING STORY OF GROWING UP AND GROWING OLD
“Cavendish is flawless…a must see for theatregoers of any generation” —The Vancouver Sun
Nicola Cavendish stars in this touching, vividly rendered story about a sprightly 91-year-old New Yorker and her 21-year-old grandson. Leo, who has just cycled across the country, shows up unannounced on Vera’s doorstep with a bike, no money, and nowhere to go. In time, these unlikely roommates stop squabbling and, with humour and compassion, help each other navigate their changing worlds.

"This was a fabulous performance. We absolutely loved Nicola’s portrayal of what we shall all become...wise, though old! Many smiles and tears and nods of agreement as we lived with her on your stage! We shall recommend this play to everyone we meet...and I would be remiss by not acknowledging the acting abilities of Nathan...what a sweetie! He was so patient with his grandma and showed us all how to respect our elders...in such a Nathan way. This was one of our faves after many, many years of enjoying the Stanley Theatre. Thank you all..."
"Great performance. Glad to see Nicola back. A warming story about maturing and getting old. Bravo to the cast."
"4000 Miles is thoughtfully funny. There were many scenes that my husband and I could relate to because the characters reminded us of our parents, children, and often ourselves."
"We absolutely loved the play. Nicola Cavendish was at her best. The play was hers to own. The young man was also brilliant, well suited for the role. The acting was believable and the script brilliant. We will definitely tell all our friends it is a must see."
"FABULOUS! We are season ticket holders and love all of the plays we have seen for the last few years— but this one is a STANDOUT! Terrific acting, amazing screenplay, perfect set and music, costuming etc. Loved every minute of it (and immediately went on Facebook when we got home to encourage the rest of Vancouver to go!)"
"I enjoyed this play very much. It has given me much food for thought. During the performance I completely forgot that it was ‘on stage, a play.’ I felt I was listening to real people discussing real things. The gradual disclosure of each of their lives was well-written. I enjoyed the comedy in the play. The music was excellent in setting the mood. Thank you very much."
—Susan, North Vancouver
"I was totally immersed in the play and the characters. When people began clapping and I realized it was over I was amazed—seemed like the time flew by. A great Vancouver story. As we were leaving, we saw Nathan Barrett getting onto his bike and were able to say job well done. Having teenage grandsons around, it was obvious how perfectly he portrayed the physical ease of a young man, mixed with the awkwardness of growing up. Loved it, loved the cast."
—Linda, North Vancouver
"We loved it. As expected Ms. Cavendish was superb and the rest of the cast were nothing short of GREAT. We have always enjoyed the plays you choose for us to see. Thank you."
"Excellent—a wonderful start to the season. The acting was probably one of the best I have seen. The reality of the story and life made one want to whistle and skip down the street. Yes I have recommended it already to the younger generation friends."
"Once again Nicola Cavendish gives 4000 Miles the energy and humour it needs to be a good play. Her timing is impeccable and allows us to enter into her life as she shares the wit of a 91-year-old who’s very much alive. A joy to see."
"When I read what the play was about, I wondered what they could expand upon, but was very pleasantly surprised. The script was good, some very good laughs and the actors were excellent, especially Vera (Nicola Cavendish) and Leo, the grandson. Thoroughly enjoyed it."
"Nicola does it again. She is completely credible as a 92-year-old dealing with a teenage grandson. As a senior myself, I was particularly able to identify with the aging and early dementia symptoms she exhibits. It was all done with a sense of humour to soften the aspects of reality."
"The play, the acting, the set—all were splendid!"
"4000 Miles was one of the freshest shows I have seen in a while. The dialogue between the grandma and her grandson was so witty and sincere. So often family dramas get shouty and over acted. This one was perfection—a balance between poignant and hilarious. Nicola Cavendish is hands down one of the best actors I have ever seen on stage. Her physicality and timing are superb. Nathan Barrett was so wonderful as Leo. It is not easy to play idealistic youth and keep it believable. I was charmed and exasperated with him in all the right ways. And finally, the set. The apartment, trapped in layers of the 60’s and 70’s, was terrific down to the details of the drapes, carpets and glassware. I felt like I could smell the place, not in a bad way, but like my grandma’s place. The set lighting was amazing, like a fine patina of yellowing age over the whole thing. Well done."
"I enjoyed every minute. The acting was superb. The characters truly brought to life. My first time at the Stanley Theatre was very enjoyable."
"Hilarious and entertaining. Would recommend it to others."
—Ruth, New Westminster
"Very entertaining and funny! I have a friend who has a grandson staying with her for the summer and the play reminded me of them. The acting was superb. The Arts Club has such good plays."
"Beautifully written play, luminously realized by Nicola Cavendish and the rest of the cast. This is why I love live theatre!"
"Perfect play. Perfect story, perfect set, perfect casting. We were enchanted from the first moment to the last. In fact, we were sorry to see the play end. Will try to see it at least once more!"
"Excellent performances from all the actors. A well written, thoughtful, amusing script that leaves you with more questions than answers. A great example of the difference in the generations and their relationships. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. The Arts Club, continues to provide great entertainment value in their productions."
"Fantastic show! Engaging, entertaining, and I’ve already recommended it to several friends."
"It was brilliant. They both nailed their characters. Nicola Cavendish has always been an outstanding performer and Nathan Barrett was pure delight. The music was also excellent—I am a product of the 60’s so could certainly relate."
"It happens that I am a grandma and remember being cool in the days of Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. The play is beautifully written and performed and the set is just excellent. Love all the concern for detail. No one’s life goes as our scripted plans had hoped. Nicole’s aging was so tender and I did not always laugh when she found difficulty finding a word. Took some bits a bit personally so at the end, I had worked up to a big cry. Crying is so close to big laughs that I enjoyed the moment. Not too many performances create so much emotion. Thanks for the afternoon—it was so enjoyable."
—Ethel, New Westminster
"FANTASTIC!! I took my early 20s daughter and we both laughed out loud, shed a tear, and were very pleased by the performance. The intimate theatre was perfect to allow us to really feel connected with the dialogue. The unfiltered commentary was realistic and the characters delightful. The evening flew by and we both loved the play. Highly recommend."
"Great show and wonderful chemistry between ‘Grandma and Grandson’. As always, Nicola Cavendish is a delight, and makes it all seem so effortless. The Asian ‘girlfriend’ was an absolute riot and had us all in stitches."
"The play is entertaining with quite some seriousness and depth to it. It’s always a treat to see Nicola Cavendish on stage. Agnes Tong displayed extraordinary acting. I hope to see her in bigger roles at the Arts Club in the future."
"We both thought the performance was extremely well done. The actors were superb—the main actors fantastic. We enjoyed the storyline—thank you for another great production at the Stanley. Well worth our 1.5 hour drive into the city. A big 10 out of 10 from us."
"Thoroughly enjoyed this performance!"
"It was delightful and very well acted! I am in awe of those that can memorize a whole play and deliver it so perfectly! My first play and I am thrilled I bought seasons tickets."
"We loved it! All the cast were wonderful! Nicola was great! So glad she is back—didn't miss a beat, truly entertaining. The time just flew by."
"The theme of the story was so familiar, so touchingly portrayed. I laughed a lot and cried one time. Frustrations, hurts, anger, needs, misunderstandings, love, patience, kindness, and honesty are only some of the emotions touched upon in this wonderful play. I feel the frustrations of the grandmother and I know her young grandson. Life can be rough and beautiful."
—Jacqueline, North Vancouver
"Nicola Cavendish was great as we knew she would me. The other actors were a wonderful surprise. They have talent and will no doubt have long and distinguished careers on stage. Good start to the season."
—Mary Jane, Parksville
"I enjoyed the performance very much. Both the main characters nailed their age performance. It was very funny and very true to life."
"Nicola Cavendish—nothing else needs to be said! I always feel so privileged to watch her perform. I was with a friend, relatively new to BC, who was unfamiliar with Ms. Cavendish's work or reputation—and she was just blown away. The rest of the cast was wonderful as well—a real joy to watch."
"Nicola is wonderful and so perfect in diction...loved her performance! The play subject is topical...and I liked the experience of the set and acting. Thanks for asking!"
"Nicola Cavendish is still my favourite Arts Club actor and she did not disappoint last night! What a wonderful show with great acting and the surprise visit from the Parsons, The New School for Design, student. Nathan Barrett, too, was beautiful to watch. Maybe one day Ms. Cavendish can re-enact her Snowin' on Bowen role, but you'd have to pull out a miracle to replace my other favourite, now deceased actor, Denis Simpson. Thanks Arts Club, for the quality entertainment!"
"Fantastic. An excellent theatre piece. The writing was exceptional. The directing, perfect. The performances were excellent. A strong cast completely, but Ms. Cavendish was bloody brilliant! I swore I was watching and listening to my 87-year-old mother. She nailed it!"
"I thought this play was absolutely fantastic! Nicola Cavendish is so thoroughly entertaining and it is a delight to have her back onstage. The rest of the cast was wonderful as well. The story had every emotion attached to it that I can think of. Bravo to a fabulous first-of-the-season show. More Nicola more often!"
—Kathy, North Vancouver
"Terrific to see Nicola Cavendish again—like an old friend. This role was made for her, her body language, speech, and facial expressions are spot on! Her younger co-star is going places! A delightful and thought-provoking play—congrats!"
"Loved it! Nicola Cavendish was marvelous, as usual, and the rest of the cast were great."
"Great to see Nicky doing what she does so well again! The caricatures and foibles of the young and old illustrated in stark fashion was amusing, but also hit close to home on occasion."
"Nicola at her BEST! Wowed by the set—the acting really outshined everything! Loved this show so much. If this reflects the rest of the season we are in for a great year! Thank you Arts Club!"
"Four of us, all female, all seniors, came to see 4000 Miles, which was the first time any of us has ever been to the Stanley Theatre. We absolutely loved every minute of it. We purchased our seats quite late, and wondered if we would be able to see the stage properly. But discovered that what I have heard said, that there isn't a ‘bad seat’ in the theatre, is true. Unfortunately we are not greater Vancouver residents, but the next time we come to Vancouver, we will definitely attend another performance. Thanks for the great job all of you do."
"THIS WAS THE BEST! Nicola Cavendish plays 91 better than anyone...so poignant and funny and brilliant! I took my mother and I'm going again with my husband! What a way to start the season."
"Hilarious and outstanding! Nicola Cavendish was absolutely amazing as Vera, I have never laughed out loud so much in any of your plays. It was so true to life, exactly how my parents and grandchildren interacted! Loved it and have recommended to friends already."
"I thought the play was excellent, so much fun. I really enjoyed the interplay between the grandmother and grandson, reminded me of my own family. I thought the characters were perfectly cast, the drunk girl the grandson picked up was hilarious. One of the better performances of the night. A great start to the Arts Club season."
"Loved it. Nicola Cavendish was a delight. Her professional background allowed me to hear all her dialogue without the aid of the hearing equipment you provide. She's an excellent role model for most of the actors."
"Great show to start off the season. The cast were all fabulous and Nicola Cavendish—what can I say? I laughed, I cried, and left with a happy glow."
"Laugh out loud wonderful as only Nicola can do. It is great to have her back!!!"
"Great show, great acting, and funny to boot. We loved it. Thanks, Arts Club!"
—Van, Bowen Island
"Very enjoyable. Great dialogue relating to the relationship of the young and the elderly. Nicole Cavendish stole the show. We need more of her delightful performance in other roles."
"My husband and I totally enjoyed this play— the writer must have lived some of the moments portrayed as they were so true to life. Nicola Cavendish as Vera did an outstanding job. We sat in the balcony and some of the lines were hard to hear, but overall, this play is well worth seeing."
"Nicola Cavendish! What else is there to say?"
"Nicola and Nathan are absolutely believable as Grandma and Grandson. There is real tension and frustration as well as many touching and tender moments as they portray Vera and Leo, somewhat estranged and leery of too much information-sharing. The humour, as they find their way to real understanding and caring for each other, feels genuine. Beautiful performances by two outstanding actors—one a legend, and the other full of promise. BRAVO!"
"I thought 4000 Miles was excellent. Nicola Cavendish is outstanding and her comedic timing is amazing!! I would go back and take the whole family!"
"An excellent script, beautifully mounted and interpreted by a superb cast. It was a totally delightful evening of theatre. Wonderful to see Nicola Cavendish back on stage."
"Wonderful production and the two principal performers gave excellent performances."
—Lyn, North Vancouver
"Loved it!!!!!! Made me laugh, made me sad, and then made me laugh again."
"I thought the play was funny and upbeat. The ending was well timed and the cast was fantastic. I would gladly go a second time."
"I had low expectations when I walked into the theatre. However, I thought the play was fantastic. Very funny and it moved me deeply. Great acting by the leads. Congratulations on another outstanding production!"
"Excellent. I didn't want the evening to come to an end. The dialogue was brilliant, the characters complex and fascinating, and the story simple yet packed with wonderful crazy details that made everything fully believable. The acting was flawless, perfect in speech, mannerisms, and costume. I LOVED this production and would enjoy seeing it again. Loved the music too. Congratulations to you all and thanks so much."
"Loved the show! Nicola Cavendish is incredible in her role—who else could have the audience in stitches by simply folding laundry?"
"Excellent! As always, a wonderful play brought to us by so many very talented and dedicated people on a creative set and presented by excellent performances by all the actors. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon. Thank you again, for connecting with us for another season. Great way to start it off!"
"Excellent acting by all! Serious story material lightened with appropriate humour. Very enjoyable."
"The play was over and I was immediately out of my seat clapping. The reasons were many, including: Nicole's return to stage, the realization of my own luck for having moments with my grandparents and the hope that my own newborn son would have them with my parents. I laughed and cried and was touched in a way I didn't know I could be by a play. What a wonderful way to start the season...congratulations on another memorable start."
"Great, hilarious show. Vera and Leo are wonderful on stage together."
"This was my first show as a season ticket holder and I wasn't disappointed. 4000 Miles hits all the right emotional notes. The characters reminded me of people I knew and it was such a treat to be watch these beautiful, intimate conversations taking place on stage."
"Very fine. Nicola inhabits her characters. I especially enjoyed her throwing the backpack and kicking the boot. Real Nicola touches."
"A wonderful coming of age and aging story. Nicola Cavendish is amazing: her physical abilities are both comic and realistic. She has this character in her back pocket! I am still thinking about the connections in this script—well written and tight. I am pleased there was no intermission, not needed and an unwelcome interruption if there was one. The music was fitting, and certainly enjoyed by the audience (I heard several people singing along or murmuring the name of a song in recognition.)"
"The storyline was really touching. The plot and characters were developed well and the plot unfolded seamlessly."
"What a fantastic performance. The interplay between Vera and Leo is magical: both poignant and hilarious. Cavendish has amazed me since I was a teen and I continue to be in awe of her presence on any stage."
"Loved it and still smiling a day later!"
—Leneen, North Vancouver
"Absolutely loved the show! Nicola Cavendish was amazing! Hit a bit too close to home at times..."
"Great way to kick off the season! Terrific show, amazing performance!"
"The play was fantastic. My companion and I enjoyed every minute and after the play we had the honor and privilege of meeting Nicole Cavendish at Starbucks and shared a few thoughts of aging and its effects with her. She is a delight!"
"One of the best productions we’ve seen at the Stanley. Extremely well written, crafted, and directed. Not only was Nicola Cavendish superb, but so were the other actors. The show lasted 1 3/4 hours but didn't seem like it. We very quickly identified with the characters, there was humour and pathos. A fantastic show we are recommending to all our friends!"
"Great play. Cavendish outstanding. Rest of cast very good. Excited to see good theatre in Vancouver."
—Jan Hynek, Vancouver

"Excellent performances, humorous, timing to a tee. Really enjoyed everything. Great work."
"An outstanding production. Entertaining, witty, and drawing lots of laughter while dealing with serious life passages and events. Nicola Cavendish and Nathan Barrett were wonderful in their roles."
—Betty Anne, Surrey
"A fine balance between touching and funny. The characters were completely relatable as if they were our own family members."
"The play started a bit slow but the character of the grandmother built quickly and was played to perfection with the humour coming out constantly from her interaction with her grandson. A marvelous performance."
"Standing ovation! Love, loss and laughter! Bravo."
"The journey of life told in such a real and funny way! Loved it."
"This was a great show and Nicola Cavendish is great as always. The whole cast were wonderful and we both enjoyed the night."
"AMAZING!!! Vera was so good, the play was very well written and the lighting superb!"
"My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the play. Nicola Cavendish was outstanding and a joy to watch. I liked the juxtaposition of the ages of the main characters, and thought it was a great representation of the old and the new, reminding us that our humanness is the common denominator in all relationships."
"I am still giggling...I had to stifle my laughter so I did not miss the next priceless line! So funny, so true, and I would love to see this play again...just to laugh some more!"
—Anne, West Vancouver
"Great script and casting. All actors performed very, very well. Thoroughly enjoyed the performance."
