“When I was a kid I always got into all kinds of trouble and my parents would ground me a lot. I had a low window in my bedroom that was in the back of our house so I would sneak outside and talk to our neighbour, Mr. Wallen, who was ALWAYS outside sitting in his yard. I would tell him about the things I did that got me into trouble and he would always be so forgiving and treat me as though I was an adult. I was so grateful for his kind wise words. “In high school I was something of a delinquent and spent a lot of time in detention. Being around so late, I befriended the school janitor. He told me how he had always wanted to become a teacher, but that due to his falling in with the wrong crowd, he did not finish high school and could not pursue his dream. Our conversations and his cautionary tale taught me about life and about consequences. He encouraged me and inspired me to live up to my potential and follow my own dream. Sadly, he did not live long enough to see me graduate from medical school, but I am certain he would be proud.”
